Naturally Occurring Terpene

Borneol is a naturally occurring terpene derivative found in some strains of the cannabis plant. Its best known for its aromatic properties, which can range from camphor to menthol, but are most commonly associated with earthy scents.

In cannabis plants, it is most commonly found in Haze and OG Kush varietals. Besides cannabis, Borneol constitutes a major part of the incredibly pungent plants, such as camphor, mint, and rosemary.

Borneol also has a long history of use in medicinal applications. It can be found in insect repellents, topical treatments for hemorrhoids, perfumes, and over-the-counter sleep remedies. As such, it is commonly associated with products that boost health and provide immune system benefits.

On its own, Borneol can generate a cooling sensation when applied to skin that is similar to the tingling feelings brought on by menthol.

The most famous cases of Borneol usage are in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is suggested for people with colds and respiratory diseases. Herbal medicine primarily uses Borneol from the Dipterocarpus genus of flowering plants found throughout southern Asia. The greatest concentration of these plants is found in Borneo, the third largest island in the world, and the namesake of the molecule.

While Borneol is a less-common molecule in cannabis plants, its distinct smell and traditional medical associations make it an important component of many indica varietals.
