Over 100 cannabinoids have currently been identified, and there are potentially even more out there waiting to be found.
Among the newest to have been discovered is THCB, or tetrahydrocannabutol, which was isolated by a group of Italian researchers in December of 2019. This discovery was made alongside the discovery of two other cannabinoids: CBDB and THCP.
THCB is a butyl derivative of THC, the main psychoactive component in the cannabis plant, which can also be found in trace amounts in the hemp plant. Butyl derivatives are chemical compounds derived from one of the two isomers of butane.
THCB is a partial CB1 receptor agonist, which means that it activates the CB1 receptor found in the endocannabinoid system. This affinity actually separates THCB from THC, as THC has a lower binding affinity to the CB1 receptor.
THCB is a recently discovered cannabinoid, and research on its potential effects is ongoing. Preliminary findings hint at qualities that might support comfort and a healthy inflammation response. Its potential to promote restful sleep is also being explored. The psychoactive properties of THCB, if any, are yet to be determined.
